The City of Benton City was recently awarded $25,000 to develop and operate a youth kayak, hike, and stand-up paddleboard recreation program. A program schedule and registration for participants age 10-18 residing in the Kiona-Benton School District will be available soon.

The City of Benton City was recently awarded $25,000 to develop and operate a youth kayak, hike, and stand-up paddleboard recreation program.  Benton City will use this grant to provide 472 youth, ages 10-18, with kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and hiking trips. Water activities will start from Sportsman Park, paddling on the Yakima River. Hikers will trek on three nearby public trails. The city will buy kayaks, paddleboards, paddles, life vests, and a trailer. The grant will help cover transportation and staff. The project will promote healthy lifestyles, outdoor safety, positive social relationships, and lifelong recreational skills. This program is the only outdoor programming not tied to team sports in Benton City, where 64 percent of the Kiona-Benton School District's 1,500 students are eligible for free and reduced lunch, and 18 percent of families with children under the age of 18 live in poverty.  The City will contribute $18,030 in cash and donations of materials.

The City is actively working with its community partners, including the Kiona- Benton School District, Prosser Memorial Health, Columbia Kayaking Adventures and Northwest Paddleboarding to purchase the needed equipment and secure instructor contracts to lead the outings.  The goal is to have two, one week sessions near the end of August, and continue the program through the summers of 2020 and 2021.  Once the equipment and contracts are put in place, the City will release a program schedule and begin accepting applications for participants ages 10-18 who reside within the Kiona- Benton School District.  There will be a small fee to register for these activities; however, the fee will be waived for youth from military or veteran families.
